Title: Survivors
Series: It went bang - Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7
Author: Gumnut
Fandom: Star Trek: the original series
Characters: Kirk, Spock, Scott, McCoy
Challenge: To get anything written
Rating: PG13
Summary: All that survives.
Word count: 1,336
Spoilers & warnings: Spoilers for its prequels. May contain disturbing imagery.
Disclaimer: Mine? You gotta be kidding. Money? Don't have any, don't bother.
Author's notes: I'm finding this and the last chapter a little bitsy and not holding together very well as part of the whole. They are coming out more as individual scenes than a solid story. I may need to rewrite them in the future. Many thanks to all of you who have continued to support me in writing this, particularly [info]slwatson. Unbeta-d, all mistakes are mine.

Feeling a little poetic [Wednesday 1st Jul 2009|10:44 pm]
[Tags|]

We drove to Whyalla a few weeks ago to stay with friends, and on the way back I was reminded of exactly why I love to go on holiday.

I think when you are free of constraints and out travelling, you see the world from a different perspective. Too much of our time is spent rushing there, dashing here, closetting ourselves at whatever workstation gives us money, and we don't have the time to stop and look, really look at the world around us.

Adelaide sits at the core of a unique weather pattern. Our changes in weather come from the west and wash over us in waves. Particularly in summer you can see the effect. The temperature will rise day by day, often into the high thirties or forties and then the wind will shift to the north as the high pressure zone passes overhead. The outback gets blown across our doorstep, sometimes its red dust leaving trackmarks on car paintwork, and then the low pressure change will march across the sky, clouds threatening, lightning flickering, the scent of hot bitumen steaming rain. The night will rumble and the next morning the temperature will be cold again. Only to start to rise in cycle over the next few days until the next change breaks over our heads.

And it is from the west, almost always from the west. But in winter the pattern is not so clear, blurred by scattered showers and cold winds.

Out on the road between the Flinders Ranges and the sea, there is very little to obstruct the view to the west. We could see for miles. It was winter. It was cold. And there was rain in the sky.

I used to think summer held all the beauty, but I think I underrated winter and missed a great deal. This time I could see the scattered showers that the weather report talked about. I could see them. A single cloud marching across the Spencer Gulf, a grey curtain beneath it merging with sea water. Another cloud, tangled in the mountain range, caught by elevation and collapsing under its own weight in a deluge of stream-filling proportions. There were so many of them. Isolated patches of rain sweeping from west to east across the plain like grey paintbrushes delivering green colour to the fields.

I saw the sun, rays slicing through cumulus to catch land, sea and cloud alike with its silver gold touch. While driving, the car would enter and leave a shower in moments, a solid downpour on struggling wipers to suddenly sunshine.

The lighting, the shadow, the green and the grey, they caught my attention, my admiration, and my memory.

I no longer have the time to dawdle as I once did. I did not get out the camera. I did not pause to stare. Travelling with a little girl in the backseat is very different to travelling by ourselves. I just hope that in the future she will be able to see and appreciate the beauty around us.

And we can gaze in wonder together.

Writing [Monday 29th Jun 2009|10:57 pm]
[Tags|, ]

It has been some time since I've attempted any serious writing. Time has been at a premium and I can always use that as an excuse. Also, I could declare this an ultimatum and say that I will write x amount of words per day from this moment onwards, but to be honest, I don't think that is practical with my schedule at the moment. So, what to do?

I'm 36 years of age and my time is only going to get busier so I really can't put off the novel forever if I want to get it written.

There will never be a perfect time to write it, so I can't give myself the excuse that now is not the right time.

The novel I have started may not be perfect and I may have had to fight with it in the past, but it is salvageable and, of the works in my head, the most likely to ever be finished. And besides, once it is finished, I can always write one of the other stories floating around in my brain.

One thing at a time...well, per activity type.

To start is fun, but to finish is ecstasy.

All excuses should be thrown out of the window.

Can you tell I'm trying to talk myself into it?

Okay, the days I work are generally untenable as I'm exhausted in the evenings and what time I have is usually devoted to KJ. So maybe, if I say that I should attempt my 1000 word aim on those days I'm not working...would that be useful? I hope so.

I just wish writing original fic was as easy as fan fic. It is so much harder with all the exposition to blab about.

But Chanu and Mick are screaming to be let out and I do enjoy them so. They have a story that needs to be told.

I just hope I can do it justice.

The Going Question [Wednesday 10th Jun 2009|10:42 pm]

Hollywood and TV peoples have been 'reinventing' or 'reimagining' old movies and TV shows a lot lately. Do you think this a good or a bad thing? Should we stick with the original piece of artwork or is it possible to do a new and improved version of the Mona Lisa? What does success depend on?

A few random thoughts on the new Star Trek movie [Wednesday 10th Jun 2009|06:19 pm]
[Tags|]

Okay, most of it has been said before and elsewhere all over the place, but I thought I'd add a few random thoughts to the deluge.

Please note: while I say I've seen some things online, I'm speaking generally not specifically. Besides, my memory is far too pathetic for specific.

Spoilers ahead )

What are your neglected fandoms?

What fandoms do you love but have only written a little in when compared to other fandoms where you've written tomes?

(For me I'm thinking of Farscape, and not so much now, Star Trek: TOS)

Do any of you use Open Office?

My Microsoft Office is getting ancient and I'll probably need to upgrade soon (though we have no money to do it at the moment), so I was thinking of switching to Open Office. Any experiences good or bad?

Title: Scientific apparatus
Author: Gumnut
Fandom: Star Trek: the original series
Characters: Spock
Challenge: Ad Astra - "'No man [or woman] is an island'. No one is as successful or unsuccessful as they are without the input of others. Your character of choice realizes this and does something. All series, all characters, all fun."
Rating: PG
Summary: Sometimes you understand more than you know.
Word count: 1,859
Spoilers & warnings: None
Disclaimer: Mine? You gotta be kidding. Money? Don't have any, don't bother.
Author's notes: Okay, it is a little corny for me to answer a challenge I issued myself and particularly corny if I find I can't answer the challenge in the way I initially envisioned. I found it far more specific in requirement than I realised. However, this fic does touch on it, just without the explanation. Many, many thanks to the wonderful [info]flatkatsi for delaying her much needed bedtime to beta read this for me (and it needed it sorely).

Quick question for American peoples [Monday 20th Apr 2009|09:20 pm]

What would an American call a 'willy-willy' or a 'dust devil'?

It's where the wind swirls into a tiny tornado that spins leaves on the ground or draws up dust.

What change have you made in your life that you're most proud of?

I have always been lucky and always seem to get what I want eventually if I try hard enough, but over the last eight years my luck and my determination have been challenged by infertility. It was hard and I came face to face with myself several times, but after many attempts, we finally managed to concieve a daughter. She was born last year, and at the risk of sounding soppy, she is the change in my life I am most proud of.

And she is still changing it, the little rat :D

Grumps [Monday 13th Apr 2009|11:14 pm]
[Tags|]

I need a holiday.

I'm not seeing one in the foreseeable future.

Consider this my grumpage.

Nutty
(who just had five days of work, but it does not feel like it)

PS: Motherhood should come with four weeks paid annual leave. Complete with a do-exactly-what-you-feel-like-when-you-feel-like-it card and authority to take priority.

PPS: Anyone commenting that that is how it is, get over it, will have a bakery product thrown at them. It may or may not have icing sugar on it, but it will be messy.

PPPS: Did I mention that I don't want to go to work tomorrow?

PPPPS: Both my hubby and my bubby are wonderful, I'm just in a whinging mood.

PPPPPS: I'm writing this line just so I can add more 'P's to the front of PS. I dare anyone to pronounce what it stands for.

PPPPPPS: I did some crochet today. First time in a long time. I have both a scarf and a rug thing happening. Mostly experiments as always. Outcomes vary....in fact I have yet to finish a single piece. This is not good. I should break that rule.

PPPPPPPS: Anyone commenting that I never finish anything will be pronounced demotivational aid of the year and dunked in a bucket of live sea cucumbers. I do finish the majority of things, and for those few I don't, you can't fault me for trying.

PPPPPPPPS: How many Ps is that now?

PPPPPPPPPS: Hmm, I feel a little less grumpy now. Must be all those Ps :D

Music [Wednesday 8th Apr 2009|10:04 pm]
[Tags|]

I need some new music. I'm currently hooked on the piece of music used in the latest Star Trek movie trailer - Freedom fighters from Two steps from hell. And I love it. Problem is if I listen too it too much it will be ruined. I need more similar music! I need emotional stuff! I need trumpets, drama, uplifting stuff. I need stuff I can ride like a wave. I need stuff that promotes writing.

No violins please.

So, any recommendations?
